Windrush Compensation Scheme
What is the Windrush Compensation Scheme
The Windrush Compensation Scheme is a UK government initiative launched in April 2019 to provide financial compensation to people who suffered losses because they were wrongly treated as if they had no legal right to live in the UK — despite having lived here lawfully for many years.
It was created in response to the Windrush Scandal, where many members of the Windrush Generation (and others from Commonwealth countries) were wrongly detained, denied legal rights, lost jobs or homes, and even deported due to the UK government’s “hostile environment” immigration policies.
Why you can claim
Before we start, we should clear up the massive misunderstanding that the Windrush generation is only those who came on the Windrush as it also encompasses the entirety of the Commonwealth who migrated to the UK between 1948 and 1973 and as a result of the Windrush Scandal the Windrush Compensation scheme came to be. So, if you have you ever had any issues because you couldn’t prove your legal right to live in the UK, whether a big or small issue, you could be entitled to compensation.
This could be due to:
- Losing access to benefits, housing and free healthcare
- Losing your job Being denied banking
- Missing education or a driving licence
- Being unable to travel
- Facing problems with detention or deportation
- Impact on life
As a result of not being able to prove your legal right to live in the UK.
Who can claim?
You may be eligible to claim if:
- You came to the UK from any COMMONWEALTH country before 1988
- Your parents came to the UK from any COMMONWEALTH country before 1973
- SOME Close family members (including grandchildren) may also be eligible.

Windrush Compensation Scheme Seminar
On Wednesday 6th September, the first Windrush Experience & Compensation Scheme Seminar was held at Grand Station, Wolverhampton, supported by the Home Office’s Windrush Help Team and City of Wolverhampton Council. The event addressed the ongoing impact of the Windrush Scandal while providing vital information on the compensation process.
The seminar was led by Robert Allen, founder of Sian Computers, a Bushbury-based IT firm dedicated to supporting the community. The event not only raised awareness of the injustices suffered by the Windrush Generation — many of whom arrived in Britain from the 1940s onwards — but also celebrated Caribbean culture through poetry, music, and food.
Robert Allen said:
“I was really pleased with the turnout from the local community and with the support from the Mayor, MP, and the council, who have all played their part in this event. We were so pleased with how things went.”
The Windrush Generation, invited to help rebuild Britain after World War II, faced denial of healthcare, wrongful detentions, and even deportations. The seminar gave a platform to share these stories, empower those affected, and highlight the importance of honouring their contribution to British society.
Veteran's Memorial Event
On the 10th of November 2024 at The New Testament Church of God, 173 Wednesfield Road, Wolverhampton WV10 0EN, a memorial service was held to honour the memory of all those soldiers who lost their lives in the two World Wars, together with subsequent conflicts. It was also to acknowledge current veterans for their unrecognised service in the armed forces.
The service was led by Bishop Paul Thomas, a veteran himself, in attendance were Deputy Lieutenant Martin Levermore MBE, Donald Campbell and his colleagues from The Forgotten Generation and members from the Home Office Windrush Engagement Team.
Following the outbreak of World War One, the British government initially refused to allow black West Indians to join up. However, as the conflict worsened, King George V instructed the War Office to recruit volunteers. 15,600 were enlisted, arranged into 11 battalions, and the British West Indies Regiment was born. 1,500 of them never returned home. The contribution of Black British soldiers, as well as those from the Caribbean, Africa, and other colonies, in both World Wars, and more recent wars is an often underappreciated but crucial aspect of British history. These men and women served with bravery and distinction, often under harsh conditions and against a backdrop of racial discrimination, Prejudice, and bullying, yet despite these challenges they fought and served with courage and dedication. Their stories are a testament to the power of resilience and the need for recognition and justice in military history.
Sian Computers CIC will be hosting this year’s Annual Memorial Event on Sunday 9th November 2025 at The New Testament Church of God, 173 Wednesfield Road, Wolverhampton WV10 0EN. We will also be hosting a Free-Of-Charge Community Memorial Meal for those who attend the service.
