Windrush Compensation Scheme
What is the Windrush Scandal
The Windrush scandal, which unfolded in the UK in 2018, involved the mistreatment of the “Windrush generation” – Caribbean immigrants who arrived between 1948 and 1971. Due to changes in immigration laws and the “hostile environment” policy, some were wrongfully detained, denied rights, and even deported. The controversy sparked public outrage, leading to apologies from the government and calls for accountability. It highlighted the unintended consequences of immigration policies on long-term residents who had contributed to British society.
In response to the outrage that ensued, the UK Government established a program established to compensate individuals affected by the Windrush scandal. It aims to provide financial redress to those who suffered harm, including wrongful detentions, deportations, and denial of rights, due to the government’s “hostile environment” policies. The scheme offers compensation for various losses, such as loss of employment, housing, and emotional distress among others. Applicants need to demonstrate that they are part of the affected group, and the scheme is designed to address the injustices faced by the Windrush generation and their descendants.
